The
first Koestler Professor, Robert (Bob) L. Morris, took up his post in late
1985. He described his goal as, “to develop a systematic and responsible
research programme that would integrate this controversial area into the
ongoing research and teaching activities of the University community.”
Morris supervised dozens of postgraduate and undergraduate psychology students many of whom have gone on to successful academic careers elsewhere. He taught and lectured widely on parapsychology and related topics, and was appointed President of the Psychology Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1996. A great ambassador for parapsychology, it can be said that Morris achieved his goal despite dying in 2004 aged only 62 years. A richer picture of his life and work can be found in this obituary (157KB), published in the Journal of Parapsychology.
